Total Hardness measures the combined concentration of calcium and magnesium in your water. Hard water is the primary cause of white scale buildup on faucets, showerheads, and inside water heaters.
We titrate for Calcium and Magnesium ions to determine Total Hardness, usually reported in mg/L or grains per gallon (gpg).
Hardness is considered an aesthetic issue and does not have a primary EPA drinking water standard. However, knowing your exact hardness level is required to properly size and configure a water softener.
When you pick up your pre-sterilized collection bottles from our lab drop-off window, we will provide a clear, step-by-step instruction sheet for gathering your water sample. All you need to know right now is that samples must be kept chilled on wet ice or ice packs and delivered back to our lab window within 24 hours of collection to ensure accurate results.
